Holy Cross fundraising roundup – April 2025

Students and staff from Holy Cross have been busy planning a number of fundraisers in recent weeks, and here’s a roundup of what they’re up to.

2024/25 is our Year of Compassion here at Holy Cross. Raising money and awareness for worthy causes is just one way that shows how much we, as a College community, care about others.

Marathon

Manchester Marathon – The Christie and Macmillan Cancer Support

Holy Cross student Joe is running the Manchester Marathon on Sunday 27th April, alongside his neighbour of many years, Aine McEntyre.

Joe’s dad John was diagnosed with cancer when he was just 10 years old. John battled through the amazing treatment and support, provided by The Christie and Macmillan, and was placed in remission.

Unfortunately, the news came that John’s cancer had returned and once again, John has been battling through treatment at The Christie.

Joe would like to give something back to show his appreciation for the treatment, help and support provided by The Christie and Macmillan over the years.

This vital support has not just helped John, it’s also helped Joe and the rest of the family.

Uganda

Catherine’s off to Uganda – raising funds for Racheal

At the end of May, Library Assistant Catherine Kelly will be returning to Masaka in Uganda to undertake charity work, and she’s also hoping to complete a half marathon.

While in Uganda, Catherine will be meeting the founder of Youth With A Vision (YWAV), John Mugabi, to find out more about the charity and the wonderful work they do to support some very vulnerable children and young adults.

As part of her charity work, Catherine aimed to raise £420 for the education of a young girl called Racheal. This money will provide Racheal with her tuition, all her stationery and one lunch meal a day for one year.

Due to incredible generosity, she reached her target with weeks to spare and has now extended this to £800.

Racheal is almost 12 years old and lives with her grandmother because her mum died when she was aged just three. She has missed out on much of her education due to poverty and she lacks the most basic needs as her grandmother is unable to support her properly.

With the love and support of YWAV, and through the generosity of others, Catherine hopes that together, we can help Racheal return to school and complete her education, so that one day soon, she will fulfil her dream of becoming a social worker.
