Language skills at this level are highly sought after by employers all around the world so studying for one or more modern languages will greatly advance your employability when you step into your chosen career.

Furthermore, a language degree develops essential skills required on a wide range of employment opportunities such as communication, independence, ability to weigh up an issue from different viewpoints, cultural awareness, adaptability, resilience, speed of thought, an eye for detail and analysis.

What we’ll study

The A level course aims to develop students' competence in the four skills of reading, listening, speaking and writing. Students acquire a broad range of vocabulary and deepen their understanding of the grammar, leading to more accurate and fluent use of the language. Students learn more about the culture, society and history of the countries where the language is spoken, through the study of a film, a book and the opportunity to research a topic of interest of the student's choosing for the speaking exam. The course is also centred around four main topic areas which develop students understanding of life in the countries where the language is spoken:

  1. Being a young person in French/Spanish/German-speaking society (families and citizenship, youth trends and personal identity, education and employment opportunities).
  2. Understanding the French/Spanish/German-speaking world (regional culture and heritage, media, art, film and music in the French/Spanish/German-speaking world.
  3. Diversity and difference (migration and integration, cultural identity and marginalisation, cultural enrichment and celebrating difference, discrimination and diversity).
  4. An important period of history (France 1940-1950: The Occupation and post-war years/ The two Spains: 1936 onward/The making of modern Germany: 1989 onwards).

Your future

A significant proportion of our students go on to higher education. Some study languages alongside another subject, such as Business or Law. Others continue with the study of the language in which they have the A Level qualification or study it alongside a new language such as Italian, Portuguese, Chinese, Russian or Arabic.

This extra skill, of being able to operate in a number of languages, means that they can benefit from employment opportunities not only in the UK, but also throughout the world. Studying languages also develops transferable skills sought by employers in areas outside the traditional realms of translating, interpreting and teaching. Such skills are excellent written and spoken communication skills, the ability to present a well-structured argument, the ability to think on your feet and adapt, problem solving and building relationships with others.

The department also offers a GCSE German course which would suit you well if you’re interested in an MFL degree as it gives you the opportunity to try a lesser taught language and demonstrate your love of language learning.

How you’ll be assessed

There are three exams at the end of this two-year A Level. There will be:

  • an oral exam which lasts for 22 minutes
  • a listening, reading and translating exam
  • a written exam in which you will write an essay on both a film and a literary work
