Overview

Never has there been a time in history when Geography was more relevant to the world around us. Climate change, environmental hazards, migration - they are all critical in the times we live in and the rapidly changing world around us. What more relevant subject could you study?

If you’re interested in geography already then you’ll know there’s more than one aspect to our wide-ranging subject, which is greatly valued by both employers and universities.

This A Level course covers many of them, so you’ll be studying elements you are likely to revisit if you take your studies to a higher level. You’ll also learn and use a variety of transferable skills that will be in great demand when you leave college.

What we’ll study

You will study three physical topics; water and carbon cycles, coastal systems, hazards and three human topics; global systems and global governance, changing places.

You will also study ecosystems and energy as ‘crossover topics’. These are classed as environmental geography - looking at both human and physical interaction in our world. You also complete a fieldwork investigation on a topic of your own choice related to the course.

Your future

This course is an ideal preparation for a wide range of possible career and higher education opportunities.

Depending on the subjects that you choose you could go straight to employment in areas such as administration and operational management, planning, management, conservation, agriculture. Or you could go on to university to study degree courses such as meteorology, surveying, forestry, oceanography, environmental science and tourism.

Assessment

As well as 3 examinations your coursework will be assessed by a Non-Examined Assessment which is worth 20% of the total A Level.

Please be aware that students must complete 4 days of compulsory fieldwork as part of the course. Alternatively, an optional 5 day residential will be available to students which would also cover this compulsory fieldwork element.
