For more than 20 years, Holy Cross College students have travelled to Lourdes as part of the Diocese of Salford Pilgrimage to Lourdes, joining hundreds of young people from across the diocese on an experience that is both inspiring and life-changing.
Lourdes is far more than a trip abroad. It is an opportunity to step outside everyday life and encounter something truly special. At the heart of the pilgrimage is a spirit of friendship, faith, service, and community, bringing together people of all ages and backgrounds in one of the world's most famous places of prayer.
During the week, our students dedicate themselves to supporting pilgrims with health and mobility needs. Whether assisting with wheelchairs, helping throughout the day, offering encouragement, or simply spending time listening and talking, they become a vital part of the Lourdes community. Through their care and compassion, they help ensure that every pilgrim can fully participate in this remarkable journey.
The pilgrimage is also a powerful opportunity for personal growth. Students return home with greater confidence, independence, empathy, and resilience. They discover the joy that comes from serving others, build lasting friendships, and gain experiences that often shape their outlook on life for years to come.
Our students describe Lourdes as one of the most rewarding weeks of their lives. It is a place where strangers become friends, where faith becomes real through action, and where simple acts of kindness can make an extraordinary difference.
As a college, we are incredibly proud of our long tradition of pilgrimage to Lourdes. For over two decades, Holy Cross students have answered the call of Our Lady and the example of Saint Bernadette by following in the footsteps of those who have gone before them, giving generously of their time and talents while creating memories that will stay with them forever.

“I have visited Lourdes every year of my entire life with the diocesan pilgrimage but the year I spent volunteering with Holy Cross was amongst the most memorable.”
“During the week here people form lifelong relationships and experience profound and life changing personal healing and discovery.”
“The humbling nature of serving others allows for self reflection, development and discovery of our faith.”
“The first time I visited the Grotto was something I will never forget. Walking through, feeling the rocks and watching the Holy water flow was a profoundly moving experience, reminding me why so many people visit, and I felt calming presence there.”
“One of the most special things about Lourdes is the connection people have, even if they haven’t met before. I was able to walk up to anyone wearing a Salford Lourdes top and make conversation, and some of my favourite moments were the spontaneous chats I would have with people.”
