“To anyone on a similar journey – keep fighting. It gets better, and I’m proof that you can overcome it and thrive. This course has allowed me to reclaim my sense of purpose and look toward the future with hope. I’ve achieved my dream of becoming a teacher, and now I’m ready to keep building on that dream, one step at a time."

Carol Kennett, a mother-of-four from Bury, overcame extraordinary challenges to pursue her lifelong dream of becoming a primary school teacher – thanks in large part to her time at Holy Cross University Centre, where she studied for her PGCE in Primary Education with QTS with Edge Hill University.

Diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer in both 2019 and 2022, Carol faced intensive treatment including chemotherapy, radiotherapy, a mastectomy, and a lumpectomy.

During this time, she also became a single parent, navigating the emotional and physical toll while caring for her children, aged between nine and 29.

In 2024, Carol made a bold decision to leave her job as a digital skills tutor and enrol at Holy Cross University Centre. The campus’s proximity to her home in Bury was a key factor, allowing her to manage fatigue and balance family life while attending evening classes and school placements.

“I was initially worried about how I would manage my energy levels,” Carol explained. “But the support I received at Holy Cross University Centre was incredible. My Support Tutor always took time to listen and reassure me, especially during anxious moments around routine scans.”

Carol’s journey through the PGCE programme was not without its challenges, but the nurturing environment at Holy Cross helped her rebuild her confidence and rediscover her sense of purpose.

She completed placements at Moorgate Primary School in Bolton and Butterstile Primary School in Prestwich, where she thrived under the guidance of supportive mentors.

“Holy Cross gave me the space and encouragement to grow, both personally and professionally. I’m proud to say I’ve achieved my dream of becoming a teacher.”

Now working with Salford Supply Desk and studying part-time for an MA in Special Educational Needs and Disability, Carol continues to build on her success.

Her story is a powerful testament to resilience, hope, and the transformative impact of studying at Holy Cross University Centre.
